The Hayden Library at MIT is a central hub for academic research, housing thousands of books and valuable resources for students and staff. However, the library’s outdated mechanical assist carriage system made it challenging to access the collection quickly and efficiently. To address this, Donnegan Systems upgraded the carriage system, incorporating new mechanical assist technology and cantilever shelving while reusing much of the existing infrastructure to reduce costs. The project was carefully planned and executed during the summer months to avoid disrupting the academic schedule, ensuring the library remained operational throughout the process.
Modernizing the Shelving System for Greater Efficiency
The main goal of the Hayden Library upgrade was to improve the accessibility and ease of use of its shelving system. By installing new Spacesaver Mechanical Assist Carriages, Donnegan Systems made it significantly easier for library staff and students to move shelves without struggling with heavy loads. This upgrade not only streamlined workflow but also increased the library’s storage capacity by adding additional shelving. Importantly, much of the existing cantilever shelving was reused, allowing MIT to save on costs while still enhancing the overall functionality of the system. The meticulous planning and execution of the upgrade ensured minimal disruption to library operations, as the entire project was completed during the summer months when the academic year was not in session.
Meticulous Attention to Detail for Seamless Book Reinstallation
A standout feature of this project was the efficient reinstallation of the library’s books. Donnegan Systems worked diligently to unload and move over 14,000 linear feet of books while maintaining their exact order. Each book was carefully returned to its original location, thanks to the use of place cards to track the precise placement of each shelf. This attention to detail ensured that the collection remained organized without the need for any reorganization after the upgrade, minimizing disruptions for the library staff and ensuring a smooth transition back to normal operations.
A Smart, Cost-Effective Upgrade for the Future
The successful upgrade of the Hayden Library’s mechanical assist carriage system highlights Donnegan Systems’ expertise in delivering customized, cost-effective solutions tailored to our clients’ specific needs. By upgrading the carriage system and reusing existing shelving, MIT was able to enhance the library’s functionality while keeping costs down and avoiding operational disruptions. The new shelving system not only optimizes the library’s current capacity but also positions it to accommodate future growth.
