In the summertime it can be hard to keep cool. Luckily we offer storage solutions that can provide ideal temperatures for what you are storing. This blog post will focus on the variety of Cold Storage Applications we offer and how they can help protect what you are storing not only over the warm summer months but all year round.
The first application we will be talking about lends itself well with the summer months as well: Beer Storage. As I’m sure you know, beer must be kept cold in order for it to stay fresh. In this particular example, a beer distributor was dissatisfied with their current cooler storage and decided they needed a better solution. Our mission as Glunz employees is to provide a great customer experience, and primarily that means delivering fresh beer on time. For the beer that’s in-house that means we have to preserve it, rotate it, and keep a tight inventory variance. Our inventory is our lifeblood. Head Operations Manager Dave Tripicchio. After listening to their concerns we worked with their team to design a storage space that would allow them to keep beer cold, allowed easy access to inventory and kegs, and help them get product out quicker than before.
The second application is one that might surprise you: Cold Storage for Museums. Museums keep 90% of their collection in storage, which can pose not only a space issue but also other storage issues, especially when temperature controlled areas are involved. In this particular example the museum needed a space to keep their film. Film needs to be kept cool in order to preserve it, so a room with HVAC integration and a High Density Mobile System seemed like the perfect way to accomplish their goals for that part of their collection. High Density Mobile compactors eliminate wasted aisle space while improving organization and accessibility. The collections are now stored in a state-of-the-art facility consisting of a cooler that’s kept at 45 degrees F and a freezer kept at -4 degrees F. This solution helped the museum and its staff save time and protect collections, while also saving space and saving money over the long term.
The third application is one that might not surprise you as much: Pathology Lab Storage. A pathology laboratory needed a safe and efficient solution for storing and retrieving refrigerated samples—and the system needed to function flawlessly in near-freezing temperatures. The lab’s new system has increased storage capacity by 130 percent, improved turnaround time, and boosted staff morale. Many labs such as this one utilize walk-in refrigerators and freezers, which can be small and not provide a lot of space for storage or access. By implementing a High Density Mobile solution in a cold storage application, you can optimize the space as well as the efficiency of the staff using the space.
The fourth application is one that may be of very high importance when it comes to solving crimes. Police departments everywhere have to keep long term evidence storage related to cases they have worked on. In some instances, they need to hold on to evidence indefinitely. This can pose a large storage and space issue. It is imperative that these departments maintain the chain of custody as well as the integrity of the evidence they need to process and present in court. This means keeping DNA and biological evidence cold at all times. In this particular example, the Houston Texas Police Department had one large room of their facility dedicated to storing over 65,000 sexual assault kits on a powered mobile system. The system is configured around the standardized dimensions of the kits, and the kits are stored in this non-frozen room until they are processed off-site and returned to the property room, where they are stored in a walk-in freezer. In addition to the processed kits, biological evidence is housed on rows of custom-built stationary shelving systems located inside the freezer. The shelving systems are made of galvanized steel, which aids in withstanding the cold and moist freezer environment, and provides 5,000 feet of cubic storage capacity.
The fifth application is one that unless you are a gardener or help run a greenhouse, you may have never thought would be necessary. Cold storage, believe it or not, is also used in greenhouses to keep seeds at the right temperature. In this particular example, Bayer Crop Science opened a 76,000 square-foot greenhouses and research facility as a part of their new Global Research and Development Commitment to Innovation. The greenhouses serve as a site for cultivating cotton and soybean solutions for the international market. The massive greenhouse is temperature and humidity controlled and was designed with sustainability in mind. In order to keep the wide variety of cotton and soybeans efficiently stored throughout the greenhouse, the designers considered alternative stainless steel shelving solutions. Within the cold rooms of the greenhouse, where temperature and humidity control is especially important, stainless steel shelving systems preserve millions of dollars’ worth of seed stock. Each movable carriage has wire shelving with trays that hold bags of seeds. The stainless steel ActivRAC 7P uses a floorless rail system that allows for maximum storage space.
The sixth and final application we wanted to share with you related to aircraft composite storage. Composite materials are in high demand for aircraft manufacturing. According to the National Institute of Aviation Research (NIAR): The use of composites in modern aircraft designs is accelerating and will underpin a quadrupling of the aerospace composites market over the next 20 years. Although this means a significantly lighter airplane with increased fuel savings, it also means an increase in the refrigeration and shelf life of materials that need to be stored, as most facilities are expected to have these materials on hand. Our ActivRAC mobile storage system can be used for temperature-sensitive warehouse and facility storage areas down to -20 degrees F. The system consolidates the items in your cooler and freezer storage into a smaller space while doubling your capacity.
Your business, company, research facility, or department can only be as good as what you are storing. If a craft beer distributor is lacking space and the proper storage, what they sell their customers will reflect that. If a police department allows DNA evidence to be contaminated due to a lack of proper storage, a case could be thrown out and a guilty criminal could walk free. If a research lab lacks the proper storage space or the temperature of their storage space is inadequate millions of dollars could be lost and many more lives affected. Cold storage is a necessary thing in today’s world and many people are looking for ways to implement this kind of storage into their facility. Combat both the space challenges as well as the temperature challenged with the proper storage solutions and the proper help. Contact us today to see what difference a storage expert can make.
